Towards a transdisciplinary demographic theory of birth and death trajectories

In this outreach piece, Annette Baudisch introduces the Born Once - Die Once project, which starts from a novel premise: birth and death, while opposite in nature, may share deeper connections than previously recognized. The key insight? Just as we only die once, each child is also born only once. This simple observation unlocks a powerful new framework for studying fertility patterns using the mathematical tools developed for mortality research.

The publication reveals how aging may impose shared constraints on both survival and reproduction, explores regularities in birth patterns that strikingly mirror those found in death patterns, and outlines an ambitious vision to develop a transdisciplinary theory aiming to connect these fundamental processes across scales, such as individuals and social units. The implications span from understanding human aging to improving population forecasts in our rapidly changing world.
